US search-engine giant Google is interested in setting up a base in Malaysia, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said, according to reports Sunday.
“They want to make their presence felt in Malaysia. It will be a big boost for our ICT industry,” he told reporters after meeting Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Earlier reports here said that Google was looking at Malaysia, India or Vietnam to establish the world’s biggest server farm — a cluster of powerful computers used to store data.
Abdullah said Malaysia ranked as the top users of Google in Southeast Asia, which was another reason why it would make sense to use the country as a base for its operations.

Today Google.org shared its game plan, announcing five core initiatives to help combat climate change, global poverty and emerging threats such as pandemic disease. These initiatives draw upon Google’s strengths in access to information and scalable technology.
The five major initiatives:
- Develop Renewable Energy Cheaper Than Coal (RE<C)
- Accelerate the Commercialization of Plug-In Vehicles (RechargeIT)
- Inform and Empower to Improve Public Services
- Fuel the Growth of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises
Google will use a range of approaches including grants, investments in for-profits and advocacy, and will continue to tap the experience of Google engineers and other team members.
One of Google’s partners is Pratham, a non-governmental organization (NGO) in India that creates the ASER Report, a yearly nationwide survey on education outcomes. Their 2005 report provided data for the first time on basic reading and math skills for children in rural India. The report seeded a national conversation between governments, NGOs and private providers about the state of education and served as a catalyst for change. Google’s support will help expand their work to other sectors and potentially to other countries.
Please visit Google.org for more information on initiatives announced today.

Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a national identification number, issued to all taxpayers of India whose income is taxable. This number is issued by the Income Tax Office.
PAN structure is as follows: AAAAA9999A: First five characters are letters, next 4 numerals, last character letter.
PAN has to be given for all kinds of investments. This means that there is no limit above which this is required and this results in a situation where even one rupee of investment requires the number. Dematerialisation accounts (Demat accounts) and mutual funds investments are two areas where this rule is being enforced.
Most people believe that financial planning is required for their business as it plays an important role in this area. While this is true, it is equally important is that there is a need for financial planning for an individual also because the achievement of each individual’s financial goals is tough to achieve.
The requirement earlier was that in many areas like mutual funds and primary market issues the PAN would have to be quoted only when the investment was more than Rs 50,000. This kept small investors out of the requirement to quote the number every time.
Now every small investors will have to have this number otherwise the investment will be out of bounds for them. This might require some additional work for some investors, but it will also mean that tax authorities can track the entire investment of a person.
The PAN number can be considered to be similar to Social security number issued in United States to citizens and other legal residents.
