Rumours are doing rounds that Google has signed a letter of intent with Digg to purchase the social news site for around $200 million.
Google has a history of buying companies like YouTube, Blogger, Picasa, GrandCentral, Keyhole (Google Earth), Writely (Google Docs), JotSpot (Google Sites), Dodgeball etc. Purchasing Digg wouldn’t be any surprise.
It is reported that the deal would be finalized within two weeks and that Digg would continue to operate as part of the Google News operation, which already runs one of the most popular news sites on the web.
Founded in 2004, Digg has become possibly the best-known of the news aggregators, a successful example of Web 2.0 – and it has a healthy ad deal with Microsoft.
This could be the next step for Google to further expand with another news service.
