Undersea sub-cable cut causes mass internet outages

Filed under: Miscellaneous — SticKer @ 5:41 am

Interoute, the internet networks company, reports that three of the four internet sub-cables that run from Asia to North America have been damaged.

These carry more than 75 per cent of traffic between the Middle East, Europe and America.

Egypt’s communications ministry says Internet cables in the Mediterranean Sea have been cut, causing massive Internet outages.

Undersea cables were also damaged in January, causing outages in the Mideast and India.

Yemen and Sudan were also having phone and Internet difficulties Friday, but it was unclear if it was connected to the outage.

Packet loss for each country can be checked at: http://www.internettrafficreport.com/asia.htm

Google Search Tips

Google can be your phone book.
Type a person’s name, city, and state directly into the search box, and Google will deliver phone and address listings at the top of the results. The feature works for business listings too.

Google can be your calculator.
Type a math problem into the search box and Google will compute it. You can spell out the equation in words (two plus two, twelve divided by three), use numbers and symbols (2+2, 12/3), or type in a combination of both (ten million) *pi, 15% of six).

Longer is better, but shorter is ok.
Google is designed to return high-quality results even for one- or two-word queries, so you can keep your searches short. But adding a few more words often yields better results.

Use quotation marks when precision matters.
Typing “the search is over” into Google will return web pages about the rock song by Survivor – but leaving off the quotes will produce an assortment of unrelated pages. The reason: adding quote marks phrase as it was typed. That makes quote marks especially helpful when searching for song lyrics, people’s names, or expressions such as “to be or not to be” that include very common words. (more…)

Google to buy Digg for $200 million?

DiggRumours are doing rounds that Google has signed a letter of intent with Digg to purchase the social news site for around $200 million.

Google has a history of buying companies like YouTube, Blogger, Picasa, GrandCentral, Keyhole (Google Earth), Writely (Google Docs), JotSpot (Google Sites), Dodgeball etc. Purchasing Digg wouldn’t be any surprise.

It is reported that the deal would be finalized within two weeks and that Digg would continue to operate as part of the Google News operation, which already runs one of the most popular news sites on the web.

Founded in 2004, Digg has become possibly the best-known of the news aggregators, a successful example of Web 2.0 – and it has a healthy ad deal with Microsoft.

This could be the next step for Google to further expand with another news service.

4Chan gets Google Owned!

Google Trends is a tool from Google Labs that shows the most popularly searched terms from the beginning of 2004 to now.

Google Trends charts how often a particular search term is entered relative the total search volume across various regions of the world, and in various languages.

Recently, A well known forum that goes by the name of ‘4Chan’ decided to get together and all search the same thing at once. That query basically is “fuck you google” flipped over.

Google was quick in fixing the problem but Internet users were quick enough to take the snapshots :)

Yahoo’s Jerry Yang warns employees

According to Yahoo!, Microsoft teamed up with Carl Icahn with an offer to acquire the battered company’s flagship search engine on Friday night, under the condition that Yahoo! accept the deal within 24 hours.

Yahoo CEO and founder Jerry Yang sent an e-mail to employees warning them of the pending mess and offered a Q&A:

Subject: over the weekend — joint microsoft/carl icahn proposal

yahoos,

on friday evening, our board received a search and restructuring proposal from microsoft and carl icahn. in essence, this proposal would hand over to microsoft yahoo’s search business and the rest of the business to carl icahn. our board rejected this for a number of reasons, that boil down to a determination that this deal would be disadvantageous to yahoo stockholders. with our annual meeting quickly approaching on august 1, i want to give you an idea of what to expect over the coming days and weeks.

proposals and attacks by microsoft and carl icahn leading up to our meeting are likely to get even more contentious. i know this could is distracting at the very least. but i know that we can count on all of you to continue to focus on what we do best — transforming the experiences of our users, advertisers, publishers and developers. i also realize that you, and our customers and partners, may have additional questions. to address these, below is a brief faq that should help.

please be assured that the board, the management team, and i are all focused on doing what’s best for the business and our stockholders. we are prepared to let our stockholders, not microsoft and carl icahn, decide what is in their best interests. and we look forward to the upcoming vote at our stockholder meeting. thank you for your hard work and commitment to yahoo.

jerry
