Google Search Results Promote and Remove Feature

I’m seeing a new feature today ‘Promote and Remove button’ next to Google search results. Note: These buttons only appear when you are logged in and only affect the results that you see.

Log in to your account, promote a page and up it comes, then logout and you will see it drop back. Login again and there it is back at the top.

I’m not sure I really see the point of this? does google gather the data to alter the SERPS? otherwise surely it undermines their results?

We wondered what it was, I wonder if Google is going to use it to capture data like their Analytics ? Maybe the more people that raise the same site with have an affect on the serps. Not seen anything on the Google blogs yet though.
